Description
The Memmia Mosaic pillow is inspired by one of the first mosaic floors I encountered while exploring the ancient Roman city of Bulla Regia in northwestern Tunisia. Named for Julia Memmia, a wealthy Roman noblewoman and civic patron who funded the city’s magnificent public baths in the early third century AD, this design pays tribute to both the artistry of the mosaic and the woman whose generosity helped shape the city.
The original floor features a timeless geometric composition centered on a simple square and diamond motif. In recreating it, I chose not to restore the mosaic to perfection. Instead, each tessera was carefully illustrated to reflect the floor as I experienced it—weathered, slightly irregular, and rich with nearly two thousand years of history. The warm cream tones echo the natural limestone of the original stones, while the bold black pattern creates a striking, versatile design that feels equally at home in modern and traditional interiors.
I paid particular attention to the direction each tessera is laid, preserving the subtle craftsmanship that gives Roman mosaics their remarkable texture and movement. These small details invite you to look a little closer, discovering the same beauty that first caught my eye while walking through Bulla Regia.
Whether displayed on a sofa, favorite chair, or bed, the Memmia Mosaic pillow brings together ancient craftsmanship, Mediterranean history, and contemporary home design.
